Effective management of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) becomes a formidable task with their increasing penetration at the distribution level. One of the technical challenges associated with the implementation of smartgrids is an effective protection strategy for grid connected and island mode. In this paper, we have proposed a wavelet based protection scheme for microgrids which is able to detect faults in gird connected and island mode of operation. The proposed protection scheme is independent of the variations in fault current magnitude.
