Արագած. անունը և առասպելը

Арагац является одной из гор, окружающих Араратскую долину, и центром исторической Великой Армении. Возвышающаяся рядом гора и сама долина назывались именем Ара Прекрасного – «умирающего и воскресающего» бога армянской мифологии, который в этногоническом предании выступает в образе мифологического патриарха армян, а в христианской традиции его наследником стал проповедник христианства в Армении св. Григорий Просветитель. В статье предлагается новая этимология Арагаца – имя бога Ara+gac (от индоевропейского *weh2g̑- «бить, громить»). Этим корнем обозначались vajra – оружие-молния древнеиндийского бога грозы Индры и vazra – палица иранского бога Митры. Анализ мифов и легенд об Ара Прекрасном, св. Григории, названных горах и долине подтверждает данную этимологию: в восстанавливаемом космогоническом мифе горы и долина были созданы ударом бога мифологическим оружием о землю. Aragats is one of the mountains surrounding Ararat Valley, the center of historical Greater Armenia. The nearby mountain and the valley itself were named after Ara the Handsome, the "dying and resurrecting" god of Armenian mythology, who in ethnogonic tradition presents the image of the mythological patriarch of Armenians. In Christian tradition his heir was St. Gregory the Illuminator, the propagator of Christianity in Armenia. In this paper a new etymology for Aragats is proposed – the name of the god Ara + gac (from the Indo-European *weh2g̑ - "smash"). This root used to name vajra, i.e. the lightning weapon of the ancient Indian god Indra, and vazra, the mace of the Iranian god Mitra. Our analysis of the myths and legends about Ara the Handsome, St. Gregory, the mountains and the valley comes to confirm the proposed etymology, particularly that in the reconstructed cosmogonic myth those mountains and valley were created through God’s weapon strike on the earth.
