Environmental justice

Environmental justice influences the trajectory of environmental, social-political, and critical philosophies as well as transformative activism. This chapter explores where environmental justice has sustained a critical and substantive contribution to reshaping environmental philosophy. First, by calibrating the lens of environmental justice discourse to global conditions of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, I read a coalescence of environmental justice with multiple facets, including mainstream environmentalism, non-Western, human/nonhuman, environmental philosophy, and local/global justice reform. I then survey this coalescence along the intersections of historical conflicts and alternative approaches for mutual advancement in the context of several arena: the second section analyzes the broadly construed social movements - the Mainstream Environmental Movement and the Environmental Justice Movement;the third section addresses theories that philosophers have used to describe the underpinnings of environmental justice;the fourth section examines the transdisciplinary introduction of Environmental Justice Studies as an advance to better test theory by interpretive frameworks and praxis;and my conclusion in the fifth section offers a moral ecology to frame the insights from this chapter. © 2023 Taylor and Francis.
