Both maternal attachment in rats and ewes and attachment between sexual partners in the prairie vole, one of the few monogamous rodent species, are mediated by central oxytocin. However, neither administering oxytocin into the brain nor increasing expression of the oxytocin receptor in the nucleus accumbens using a gene transfer technique converts polygamous voles to monogamous ones.
