Abstract
Testing for Australia antigen and corresponding antibody has been performed in 890 pregnant women and, after lying in, in 655 mothers and their new-born infant. Immuno-diffusion and electro-immuno-diffusion methods were used, completed by radio-immuno-assay in conflicting cases.
In the whole women group, HB antigen was found in 7,5% cases, more often in the young people, and HB antibody in 0,4% cases. In the mother-child group, antigen was found in 54 cases both in mother and in child, in 10 cases in mother alone; antibody was detected 10 times both in mother and in child.
Transaminase assay in 45 mothers and their child shown the frequency of liver cell injury without any clinical symptom of hepatitis.
These findings demonstrate the ability of Australia antigen to cross the placenta and the frequency of unapparent form of viral hepatitis in pregnant woman and in the new-born in West Africa.
