Abstract

The present study aims to understand the treatment that has been given to the Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing in the German language (Untertitel fur Gehorlose und Horgeschadigte, UGH) and in Spanish (SPS) throughout the last decades. To do so, we analyze the modality of audiovisual translation in several films produced between 1981 and 2018, focusing on the parameters most characteristic of this type of subtitling. From the diachronic point of view, the analysis will allow us to see the evolution that Subtitling for Deaf and Hard-of Hearing people has undergone in each of the languages over these years. On the other hand, we will observe the behavior of this variant of subtitling from a diatopic perspective throughout these decades in Germany and Spain, two countries that traditionally practice dubbing instead of subtitling.

Untertitel fur gehorlose vs.聋人字幕:让听不见的东西可见的挑战

期刊介绍： MonTI is an academic, peer-reviewed and international journal fostered by the three public universities with a Translation Degree in the Spanish region of Valencia (Universitat d’Alacant, Universitat Jaume I de Castelló and Universitat de València). Our first priority is to publish texts providing an in-depth analysis of translation- and interpreting-related matters that meet high standards of scientific rigour, foster debate and promote plurality. MonTI will publish one thematic issue each year, with a maximum of 600 pages, first as a hard copy journal (ISSN: 1889-4178) and, after a six-month interval, as an online journal (ISSN: 1989-9335), taking advantage of the digital platform provided by the University of Alicante. In order to ensure both linguistic democracy and dissemination of the journal to the broadest readership possible, the hard-copy version will publish articles in German, Spanish, French, Catalan and English. The online version is able to accommodate multilingual versions of articles so that authors who so desire can provide a copy of their article in a language other than the stipulated languages of publication. Furthermore, an attempt will be made to provide an English-language translation of all articles not submitted in this language. We would like to make special mention of our commitment to meeting international quality criteria. Thus, the journal will invite experts in each of the subject areas related to Translation and Interpreting to serve as issue editors. There will be an open call for papers for each issue, and at least 75% of the contributing authors will always be from universities other than our own. Each contribution will be peer-reviewed by two preeminent researchers or professionals, and MonTI will provide authors with a detailed explanation when an article is not considered worthy of publication.
