L'herbier Daniel Pellé (DP) – La collection d'un botaniste amateur de l'Aube (France)

Abstract

RÉSUMÉ Daniel Pellé (-1989) était Inspecteur des PTT à Troyes et botaniste amateur. De 1942 à 1989, il a herborisé dans le département de l'Aube (région Grand-Est), en France d'une manière plus générale, et à l'étranger à l'occasion de ses vacances. Daniel Pellé a ainsi récolté près de 2 000 spécimens et monté autant de planches d'herbier, conseillé et assisté dans sa tâche par le botaniste René Prin (fondateur de la Société auboise naturaliste, et lui-même récolteur d'environ 250 planches de l'herbier DP). L'her-bier comporte 1 983 planches, datées et localisées précisément. 1 974 planches ont été numérisées et informatisées par les auteurs de cet article, l'herbier leur ayant été transmis par la femme et le fils de Daniel Pellé en 2008; les neuf planches restantes, n'ayant pas d'étiquettes, ont été écartées du jeu de données final. Les spécimens de 133 familles taxonomiques sont répartis dans 32 chemises, une majorité de récoltes provenant du département de l'Aube (Champagne-Ardenne, Grand-Est). Les récoltes s'échelonnent de 1942 à 1989, soit de l'après-guerre au décès de Daniel Pellé. Dans cette plage de temps, les botanistes ont peu herborisé, rendant sa collection d'autant plus intéressante. Soixantequatre planches ont été récupérées via la Société française pour l'échange des plantes vasculaires (SFE), et leurs doubles dans l'Herbier de Paris retrouvés. L'herbier de Daniel Pellé a été déclaré dans l'Index Herbariorum, et porte l'acronyme « DP». Il est aujourd'hui hébergé dans les collections du Muséum d'Histoire naturelle de la ville de Troyes. L'ensemble des spécimens de l'herbier a été étudié par Christophe Reveillard, botaniste au Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle et troisième auteur de cet article. Les déterminations de Daniel Pellé et de René Prin se sont ainsi révélées exactes pour la plupart d'entre elles. Si l'herbier physique est aujourd'hui hébergé dans les collections de la ville de Troyes, le but de cette publication est de faire connaître – mais aussi de pérenniser – le contenu numérique de l'herbier DP, en incluant dans l'article les planches de l'herbier et leurs métadonnées, sous la forme d'un catalogue complet des planches. La démarche suivie par les auteurs de l'article pour informatiser l'herbier y est aussi décrite, de même que la procédure de constitution du catalogue. Enfin, c'est un hommage à Daniel Pellé, décédé dans des circonstances tragiques. ABSTRACT The Daniel Pellé herbarium (DP) – The collection of an amateur botanist from Aube (France). Daniel Pellé (-1989) was an inspector of the PTT in Troyes and an amateur botanist. From 1942 to 1989, he harvested plants in the department of Aube, in France in a more general way and abroad during his holidays. Daniel Pellé collected nearly 2000 specimens and assembled as many herbarium plates, advised and assisted in his task by the botanist René Prin, founder of the Société auboise naturaliste, and collector of about 250 of the plates in this herbarium. The herbarium itself contains 1983 plates, precisely dated and located. 1974 plates were digitized and computerized by the authors of this article (EC and SL), the herbarium having been transmitted to them by Daniel Pellé's wife and son in 2008; the nine remaining plates, having no labels, were discarded from the final data set. The specimens of 133 taxonomic families are distributed in 32 folders, the majority of the collections coming from the Aube department (Champagne-Ardenne, Grand-Est, France). The collections range from 1942 to 1989, i.e., from the post-war period until the death of Daniel Pellé. During this period, botanists did not do much herbarium work, which makes his collection even more interesting. 64 plates were recovered via the French Society for the Exchange of Vascular Plants (SFE), and their duplicates in the Paris Herbarium were found. Daniel Pellé's herbarium has been declared in the Index Herbariorum, and bears the acronym “DP”. It is now housed in the collections of the Muséum d'Histoire naturelle de Troyes (Aube, France). All the specimens in the herbarium were studied by Christophe Reveillard, botanist at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle and third author of this article. The determinations made by Daniel Pellé and René Prin have thus proved to be accurate for most of them. Although the physical herbarium is now housed in the collections of the city of Troyes, the aim of this publication is to make known – but also to perpetuate – the digital content of the DP herbarium, by including in the article the plates of the herbarium and their metadata, in the form of a complete catalogue of the plates. The approach taken by the authors of the article to computerize the herbarium is also described, as well as the procedure for compiling the catalogue. Finally, it is a tribute to Daniel Pellé, who died in tragic circumstances.
