Abstract
Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) has been extensively used in science and engineering to explore the inherent dynamic characteristics which present in a given dataset. The DMD method is used to estimate a linear model using a set of observed measurements. In this paper, a DMD-based assessment technique is proposed for distinguishing small-signal and transient stability which may be experienced as a result of small and large disturbances. To achieve this objective, time domain simulations for both linear and nonlinear models of two test systems are employed to highlight the difference between small-signal and transient response using DMD method. The main findings of this work show that the DMD method can accurately capture variations in collected measurements which correspond to the complicated nonlinear response of a power system to large disturbances. In addition, the DMD method can be effectively used in estimating the oscillatory parameter of poorly-damped modes oscillations.
