Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of grape seed extract on streptococcus mutans in children Materials and methods: Forty children were selected for this study with ages ranged from (7-12). The participants were divided into two equal classes at random; A& B (n= 20). Participants were asked to rinse with 15 ml of either grape seed extract or 0.125% CHX mouthwashes (in group A & B respectively) twice daily (after breakfast and dinner) for 60 seconds and not to rinse with water thereafter. Saliva samples were collected at 0 (baseline) (S1), after 2 days (S2) and after a week (S3). All collected saliva samples were submitted to a microbiology laboratory for total bacterial count-ing at the three intervals for the two groups, the data were then collected, tabulated, and statistically analyzed Results: The comparison between grape seed extract and CHX group showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the mean CFU between the two groups at different time intervals.(P-value=0.708,0.202,0.056) Conclusion: Grape seed extract mouthwash is considered a successful antimicrobial agent compared to a potent antiseptic as chlorhexidine when used in children.
