Abstract

susceptible to high soil moisture and groundwater levels. As such, conventional water management schemes called ‘Drainage orientated Water-management’ (DoW), predominate in areas of tropical peatland, especially plantations, and are characterised by low groundwater levels. Reducing the groundwater level for agriculture and plantations has long been a fundamental aim for tropical peatland management. Consequently, the DoW has significant impacts on the degradation of tropical peatland (1).
