Albanian, the language of the Pelasgians: Postcommunist transformations of a popular linguistics

Abstract

Épisciences - Slovo Parascientific literature on Pelasgians and the Pelasgian origin of Albanians has been remarkably successful in Albania since the 1990s. Written by amateur linguists and historians, it is opposed to official science, but nevertheless dependent on scientific production, especially that of the communist period. The aim of this article is to show how neo-Pelasgist authors are dealing with language and what this popular linguistics owes to the communist period. La littérature parascientifique relative aux Pélasges et à l’origine pélasgique des Albanais connaît un succès remarquable en Albanie depuis les années 1990. Due à des amateurs et s’opposant à la science officielle, elle n’en est pas moins dépendante de la production scientifique, en particulier de celle de la période communiste. L’objectif de cet article est de montrer comment les auteurs néo-pélasgistes s’emparent de la langue et ce que cette linguistique populaire doit à la période communiste. Literatura para shkencore në lidhje me Pellazgët dhe origjinën pellazgjike të Shqiptarëve ka gëzuar një sukses të jashtëzakonshëm në Shqipëri që nga vitet 1990. Shkruar nga gjuhëtarë dhe historianë amatorë, i kundershton shkencës zyrtare. Gjithsesi, varet nga prodhimi shkencor, në veçanti nga ai i periudhës komuniste. Qëllimi i këtij artikulli është të tregojë se si autorët neo-pellazg flasin për gjuhën dhe çfarë i detyrohet kësaj gjuhësie popullore periudhës komuniste.
