Abstract

This article aims to introduce the literary figure of Shimizu Shikin (1868-1933), one of the most representative writers in the so-called Japanese ‘women’s literature’ of the 1890s. Activist, essayist and writer, Shikin advocated for the rights of women through literature in several of her works. In the middle of the effervescent genbun itchi literary movement, she innovated with a direct and natural style in The broken ring ( Koware yubiwa , 1891) in order to weather the stylistic restrictions to which women writers were subjected.
