Abstract

The intracellular content and the extracellular potassium concentration must remain within narrow limits in order to preserve many cell functions. This chapter describes the mechanisms involved in potassium transfer between extra and intracellular fluids, which are necessary for the maintenance of internal potassium balance, and renal handling of potassium, as well as the regulating factors that are involved in external potassium balance.
