Production of volatile inhibitors of germination and hyphal extension by Geotrichum candidum

Abstract

Colonies of Geotrichum candidum produce volatile metabolites which inhibit arthrospore germination and reduce the rate of colony extension. The effects are not due to a reduction in oxygen concentration and/or an increase in carbon dioxide concentration.
