Hospitality in Shanghai: The Russian Jewish Community as Hosts and Polish Jewish Refugees as Guests during WW2

Abstract

This article is anexploration of three exile memoirs belonging to Eastern European Jewishrefugees that document a notable world history event: during WW2 when 6 millionEuropean Jews perished in the Nazis’ concentration and death camps, Shanghaiwas the city where more than 20,000 Jews were saved. Through mainly aconceptual framework inspired by Emmanuel Levinas, Jacques Derrida, Judith Stilland Anne Dufourmantelle, my article interprets different instances ofhospitality in these memoirs.
