Abstract

Prescription of psychotropic drugs concerns approximately one quarter of the population. Anxiolytic drugs, antidepressants, hypnotics and antipsychotic agents represent the most used categories. Following a recall of the pharmacodynamic properties, pharmacokinetics and metabolism of principal classes of psychotropic drugs, their odontostomatological impact and its control are considered. Oral and dental side-effects mainly result from quantitative and qualitative alterations of the salivary secretion. Regular examination of the oral cavity is required for each patient receiving such treatment. Xerostomia is responsible for alterations of both hard and soft tissues (dental decay, periodontosis, oral candidiasis…). Dental healthcare and dietetic recommendations as well as appropriated sialogogue management allow counteracting these drawbacks. Finally, using psychotropic drugs imposes particular anesthesiological caution.
