Abstract

This article aims to analyze whether there was wage discrimination by gender and race in Paraíba and in its capital, João Pessoa, in 2017. The empirical strategy consists of using Mincerian equations that will seek to capture the effects of productive characteristics and the labor market. work. To achieve this objective, two methods are employed. The first part consists of using the Oaxaca-Blinder (1973) decomposition to verify, through the wage averages of the Mincerian equations, the gross wage differential, focusing on the portion of the wage gap attributed to the explained part (workers’ characteristics) and the unexplained part (“possible discrimination”). The second method applies RIF-regressions to estimate the income equations for three quantiles: 25°, 50° and 75°. The results indicate that the productive attributes help in the salary differential between men and women, and the unexplained component indicates that the discriminatory effect tends to increase the difference between these agents. Finally, the results of the RIF-regres-sions suggest that there is wage discrimination among all groups studied along the sample quantiles. It was also observed that higher education contributed positively in all analyzed samples.
