Abstract
The thesis of this paper is that the exilic narrator wrote 1 Kings 1-2 as a programmatic introduction to the whole of the Solomon story that runs unto 1 Kings 11. This section corresponds with the dénouement of a long process of elimination of the pretenders to David’s throne from 2 Samuel 9, which implies that it has been written in favour of Solomon. A comparison with 1 Kings 3-11 shows that Nathan’s political manoeuvres, the importance of women in the struggle for power, and Solomon’s politics of the sword disqualify him as an ideal candidate for the throne.
