Abstract

Abdurrahman Atcil’in son yillarda yaptigi calismalarin bir uzantisi olarak da nitelendirilebilecek olan Scholars and Sultans in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire baslikli kitabi, âlimlerin 1300-1600 yillari arasinda Osmanli yonetimi altinda degisen rollerini, Osmanli Devleti’nin ayni zaman diliminde gecirdigi siyasi donusumler arasinda baglanti kurarak inceliyor. Calismasina ulemanin Ortacag Islam toplumlarindaki konumlarini ve siyasete karsi duruslarini degerlendirerek baslayan Atcil, siyasi yapidan bagimsiz bir ahlaki otoriteye sahip olan donemin ulemasi ile siyasi erk arasinda belirgin bir uzaklik olduguna dikkat cekiyor. As the founder of the journal, the late Nejat Göyünç (1925-2001), stated in the preface he wrote for the first volume of the journal, the aim of the journal “is to become a means for the increasingly growing number of students of Ottoman Studies to get together in this journal, to encourage young members of the scholarly profession by publishing their interesting research …, to help them to become known, and to facilitate the presentation of their research to the scholarly world.”
