Abstract

. In the models run to inform the campaign analysis in this chapter, both Russian and NATO submarines are effective at penetrating each other’s ASW barriers. For NATO, this incentivises a forward posture in a conflict with Russia. On the one hand, a reactive posture emphasising containing Russian submarines may lead to failure while an offensive posture can exploit Russia’s asymmetrical vulnerabilities.
