Channel siltation occurred due to high sediment fluxes from rapid urban processes versus reduced stream power of the river. Water hyacinth invasion, domestic waste dumps and narrow culvers constricted the river channels. Finally, an impaired river status was found and extinction projected by 2043. Abstract
