In his own time Lawrence was seen by both admirers and detractors as centrally concerned with sexuality. By the end of the century, however, after the so-called sexual liberation which has so often laid at his door, his treatment of this theme, and especially his supposed views and recommendations on sexual relations, had come to seem historical, if not outdated, to many observers.
