This pathology has been reported to be a rare entity with very few cases being reported in the literature, mostly seen between 11 and 30 years of age, with males and females being equally affected and having no predominance to the left or right side. It has also been reported to be a self-limiting condition, that is, the active growth can cease at any point in time.
