Russia Will Be “Partitioned” Anew

Abstract

ABSTRACT The “Strategy of Spatial Development of the Russian Federation until 2025” (approved in May 2017) presupposes a partitioning of Russia (not administratively but functionally) into several macroregions, which will be assigned specific priorities for economic development and industrial specialization, thereby determining their strategic place in the Russian and world distribution of labor. The article considers one proposed approach to creating macroregions on the basis of social–economic principles and presents several critiques of this approach expressed by the participants of the 2018 Krasnoyarsk Economic Forum. There remain several fundamental points that require further inquiry and discussion.
