Not just statistics: Exploring the experiences of Mexican deportees

Abstract

Centering the narratives of seven Mexican deportees, this study explored the consequences of deportation on participants’ mental health. Participants’ accounts of the deportation experience highlighted the frustration, fear, and disappointment individuals often felt after being forced to abandon established lives in the United States. Their narratives captured the challenges involved in migration and deportation. This study highlights the need for mental health counselors to become more knowledgeable of the issues that affect the lives of deportees.
