Abstract

Bioactive peptides derived from plant protein sequences have a broad spectrum of biotechnological applications, including treating oxidation-related diseases. In this way, these molecules can interact with specific receptors in human cells, modulating several metabolic functions, such as fatty acid catabolism and blood glucose regulation. Several databases contribute to the strengthening of studies in the area since plant proteins and antioxidant peptides derived from them can slow down some oxidative processes in the body, thus improving global public health. Peptides from various food sources have bioactivities, including antihypertensive, antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory effects and cholesterol-reducing effects, essential for human health. However, further studies are still needed to explore the mechanisms of action, bioavailability, and possible physiological or functional properties. Thus, scientific reviews are needed to improve further scientific knowledge in plant antioxidant peptides, an area with significant exponential growth supported by bioinformatics. Therefore, this review may provide a significant reference for the construction and development of new antioxidant peptides.

Phytochemistry Reviews is the sole review journal encompassing all facets of phytochemistry. It publishes peer-reviewed papers in six issues annually, including topical issues often stemming from meetings organized by the Phytochemical Society of Europe. Additionally, the journal welcomes original review papers that contribute to advancing knowledge in various aspects of plant chemistry, function, biosynthesis, effects on plant and animal physiology, pathology, and their application in agriculture and industry. Invited meeting papers are supplemented with additional review papers, providing a comprehensive overview of the current status across all areas of phytochemistry.
