The current review provides a comprehensive overview of the diverse roles played by immune cells in liver regeneration. Macrophages, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, mast cells, platelets, dendritic cells, type 1 innate lymphoid cells, B cells, and T cells are implicated in promoting liver regeneration, while natural killer cells and overactivated natural killer T cells are supposed to inhibit hepatocyte proliferation.
