Abstract

Studies on media coverage of climate change are mainly diachronic or focused on world climate summits. Here we analyse salience of this phenomenon in the three most widely read daily paid-for newspapers in Spain, El Pais, El Mundo and ABC, through a content analysis of their online versions during all 2017, when Donald Trump announced his withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. The results show the influence of the ideology of the newspapers on their coverage; the prevalence of political international events and among them the uncontested prominence of Trump, even over world climate summits; and a considerable presence of climate change outside their sections dedicated to the environment.
