Abstract
abstract:This introduction explores libertine botany as a set of ideas and practices emerging in early modern France and quickly taking on transnational and transcultural dimensions. In a body of work that precedes and anticipates modern queer ecologies, the alien pleasures of plants give new contours to human experience. As this issue shows, the botanical sciences of the early modern period actively structure representations of gender, pleasure, and desire in ways that continue to haunt and delight the present moment.
