Abstract
The death of Amanda Claridge on 5 May 2022 has deprived the British School at Rome (BSR) of one of its outstanding figures, whose exceptional knowledge and experience of the city of Rome was of considerable value to the reputation of the BSR during her long tenure as assistant director from 1980 to 1994 and her continuing association with it thereafter. It has also deprived the wider world of Roman archaeology of one of its most distinguished, original and independentminded scholars, whose generous enthusiasm for her subject transformed the lives of many younger scholars.1
