Croatian musical art and its development through the centuries

Abstract

This paper gives a short and comprehensive survey of the development of Croatian musical tradition from the middle ages until 20th century. The survey is based on selected readings, with an aim to offer simple insight into the main developmental trends of Croatian music but also into the pathways of its integration into the European musical tradition. Historical and political circumstances are considered where appropriate, which provides the possibility of comparing influences and outcomes of such circumstances in different developmental periods. Selection of literature greatly influenced the authors’ approach and provided main directions in defining settings and argumentation in this paper.
