Abstract

Abstract:The field of intellectual history is undergoing a transformation because of the wide-ranging attempt to bring it into alignment with the methods and aspirations toward greater inclusiveness championed by social history. Combining social and intellectual history in one indivisible field of research, however, has a distinguished pedigree in the work of Karl Mannheim whose ideas merit reexamination today by intellectual historians on the question of how best to move the field forward.
