Evaluation of glacier service function and value in the Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve in China (SNRC)

The total value of glacier service was 42.15 billion CNY in the SNRC in 2018, which is about half of this regional gross domestic product (GDP). Among the various service functions, the descending order of value was climate regulation (23.59 billion CNY, 55.96%), run-off regulation (9.73 billion CNY, 23.08%), hydro-electric power generation (6.48 billion CNY, 15.38%), fresh water supply (2.22 billion CNY, 5.26%) and other service functions (0.13 billion CNY, 0.32%). The value of glacier service in each basins and municipal areas relied on glacier area. Due to the glacier recession, the service value of glaciers in the SNRC decreased by 5.01 billion CNY (−10.63%) in 2000–2018, with a spatial characteristic of the increase in the east and decrease in the middle and west. Except for climate regulation, all other values of glacier service were increasing.
