Abstract

Ru(II)-polypyridyl complexes supported with imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline ligand are of increasing interest as photosensitizers in different research areas. A combination of rich ground-state and excited-state physicochemical characteristics of Ru(II)-polypyridyl complexes and distinct structural features of imidazo-phenanthroline core can be exploited for potent light-driven electron and energy transfer events. In the last decade, this area has dramatically expanded for several applications of such complexes as promising therapeutic and imaging agents. In view of these efforts, the present study provides an overview of the opportunities and challenges in the design and development of imidazo-phenanthroline based Ru(II)-polypyridyl based photosensitizers for the improved photodynamic therapy (PDT), luminescence-based sensing and light-driven catalyses.

期刊介绍: Coordination Chemistry Reviews offers rapid publication of review articles on current and significant topics in coordination chemistry, encompassing organometallic, supramolecular, theoretical, and bioinorganic chemistry. It also covers catalysis, materials chemistry, and metal-organic frameworks from a coordination chemistry perspective. Reviews summarize recent developments or discuss specific techniques, welcoming contributions from both established and emerging researchers. The journal releases special issues on timely subjects, including those featuring contributions from specific regions or conferences. Occasional full-length book articles are also featured. Additionally, special volumes cover annual reviews of main group chemistry, transition metal group chemistry, and organometallic chemistry. These comprehensive reviews are vital resources for those engaged in coordination chemistry, further establishing Coordination Chemistry Reviews as a hub for insightful surveys in inorganic and physical inorganic chemistry.
