For this reason, the Society for Magnesium Research has updated its 1986 recommendations for the diagnosis of magnesium deficiency. The diagnosis is based on the patient's history, his clinical symptoms, and the results of clinical-chemical investigations of plasma/serum and urine. Further diagnostic methods used include the determination of ionized serum magnesium and the magnesium retention test.
