Abstract
In this study, the radiation shielding properties of compacted pellets prepared from tourmaline, ilmenite, witherite ore, antimony ore, and bismuth ore were investigated. The elemental compositions of the samples were determined by SEM–EDX and used in the theoretical EpiXS shielding calculations. Gamma-ray attenuation measurements were performed using a 133Ba source over the energy range of 81–383 keV. Both linear and mass attenuation coefficients were evaluated to distinguish the effects of elemental composition and density. The linear attenuation coefficient of bismuth ore decreased from 20.30 ± 1.32 cm-1 at 81 keV to 2.20 ± 0.14 cm-1 at 383 keV, while that of witherite ore decreased from 13.23 ± 0.04 cm-1 to 0.59 ± 0.02 cm-1. The half-value layer increased with photon energy for all samples, with bismuth ore exhibiting the lowest values of 0.03–0.32 cm and tourmaline the highest values of 1.11–2.24 cm. The effective atomic number generally decreased with increasing energy, while the buildup factors showed a strong dependence on photon energy and penetration depth. The theoretically calculated fast-neutron removal cross-section was highest for bismuth ore (0.16232 cm-1), followed by ilmenite (0.14241 cm-1), tourmaline (0.11275 cm-1), witherite ore (0.10054 cm-1), and antimony ore (0.09463 cm-1). Among the investigated materials and under the studied conditions, bismuth ore exhibited the highest gamma-ray shielding performance, whereas neutron shielding followed a different material-dependent trend. The novelty of this study lies in the direct comparison of compacted natural mineral-ore pellets under identical preparation and measurement conditions, without dilution in a secondary composite matrix.
期刊介绍:
Radiation Physics and Chemistry is a multidisciplinary journal that provides a medium for publication of substantial and original papers, reviews, and short communications which focus on research and developments involving ionizing radiation in radiation physics, radiation chemistry and radiation processing.
The journal aims to publish papers with significance to an international audience, containing substantial novelty and scientific impact. The Editors reserve the rights to reject, with or without external review, papers that do not meet these criteria. This could include papers that are very similar to previous publications, only with changed target substrates, employed materials, analyzed sites and experimental methods, report results without presenting new insights and/or hypothesis testing, or do not focus on the radiation effects.
