Abstract

The overuse of medical care is a major challenge for modern healthcare systems, including in Switzerland, where a substantial proportion of care is considered low-value. The smarter medicine - Choosing Wisely campaign aims to reduce unnecessary tests and treatments. However, despite physicians' agreement with the recommendations, its real-world impact remains limited. Educational strategies alone are insufficient to achieve sustainable change in practice, and implementation approaches are needed. Audit and feedback, by providing clinicians with data on their performance and benchmarking against peers or standards, have shown modest but meaningful improvements in professional practice. This article illustrates their potential through Swiss real-world examples of implementation.
