Abstract
This article proposes a combined dual-protection-mode energy-selective surface (ESS) for adaptive protection against high-power microwave (HPM) threats. By integrating protection modes of passband-shifted and passband-closed, the proposed ESS simultaneously realizes high in-band shielding effectiveness (SE) and ultra-wideband protection under HPM incidence. An equivalent circuit model (ECM) is established to reveal the two protection modes and their distinct yet complementary frequency regions. Based on this analysis, a three-layer ESS composed of diode-loaded periodic metallic structures is designed, enabling quasi-independent optimization of in-band SE and broadband shielding bandwidth. The experimental results show that the proposed ESS maintains a low insertion loss (IL) below 1 dB over a wide operating band under low-power microwave (LPM) incidence. Under HPM incidence, it achieves a broadband SE exceeding 10 dB over a fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 132.3%, and an in-band SE above 20 dB over an FBW of 30.5%. The work provides a general and scalable design framework for high-performance ESSs requiring simultaneous wideband and high protection capabilities.
期刊介绍:
The IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques focuses on that part of engineering and theory associated with microwave/millimeter-wave components, devices, circuits, and systems involving the generation, modulation, demodulation, control, transmission, and detection of microwave signals. This includes scientific, technical, and industrial, activities. Microwave theory and techniques relates to electromagnetic waves usually in the frequency region between a few MHz and a THz; other spectral regions and wave types are included within the scope of the Society whenever basic microwave theory and techniques can yield useful results. Generally, this occurs in the theory of wave propagation in structures with dimensions comparable to a wavelength, and in the related techniques for analysis and design.
