Abstract
This article proposes a novel near-field (NF)/far-field (FF) dual-mode self-injection-locked sensor (DMSILS) for noncontact respiratory monitoring across diverse application scenarios. The DMSILS architecture integrates four core functional blocks: a dedicated dual-injection-mode oscillator (DIMO), an RF reconfigurable front-end module (RFEM), a power detection module (PDM), and a sensing antenna. The DIMO achieves injection locking by leveraging either injection-port impedance variation or frequency pulling induced by the injected signal. The RFEM incorporates two single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) switches to enable mode switching. The PDM converts the frequency-modulated signal into a voltage-domain respiratory waveform. The dual-mode architecture offers high operational flexibility: the NF mode enables bypassing path interference and operating effectively in confined spaces, whereas the FF mode enables extended-range sensing. Comprehensive experiments in both modes validate the performance and practical potential of the proposed DMSILS.

The IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques focuses on that part of engineering and theory associated with microwave/millimeter-wave components, devices, circuits, and systems involving the generation, modulation, demodulation, control, transmission, and detection of microwave signals. This includes scientific, technical, and industrial, activities. Microwave theory and techniques relates to electromagnetic waves usually in the frequency region between a few MHz and a THz; other spectral regions and wave types are included within the scope of the Society whenever basic microwave theory and techniques can yield useful results. Generally, this occurs in the theory of wave propagation in structures with dimensions comparable to a wavelength, and in the related techniques for analysis and design.
