Abstract
Polypropylene (PP) hollow fiber degassing membrane is easy to be wetted by water during long-term operation due to its poor intrinsic hydrophobicity. In this study, PDMS/PP hydrophobic composite membrane was prepared via dip-coating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). In this process, the pre-crosslinking time was controlled to adjust the coating solution to the minimum viscosity capable of forming a continuous coating layer. Meanwhile, the spreading of PDMS on the membrane surface was promoted by regulating the PDMS concentration, coating time and drying temperature, ultimately producing a thin and uniform PDMS coating layer. This study elucidated the formation process and anti-wetting mechanism of the PDMS coating layer. The effects of PDMS concentration, coating time and drying temperature on the morphology of coating layer, hydrophobicity and degassing performance were systematically investigated. The results showed that the water contact angle of the prepared composite membrane increased to 107.5 °. The DO removal rate was 74% and retained approximately 90% of the degassing performance of the pristine PP membrane. However, after 2160 min of continuous operation, the DO removal rate can still remain stable at 70%, which suggested that both the anti-wetting performance and long-term operational stability were significantly superior to those of the PP substrate membrane. The fluorine-free, environmentally friendly and simple modification method used in this study achieves a synergistic enhancement in both degassing efficiency and operational stability, which provides technical support for the industrial application of high-performance hydrophobic degassing membranes.
