Abstract
A compact Vivaldi antenna (0.39λ0 × 0.37λ0 × 0.003λ0) with enhanced gain performance is proposed in this letter. The antenna covers an ultra-wideband range from 2 to 22 GHz (163%) and achieves an average realized gain of 11 dB. By applying irregular curved slots, the low-band gain has been enhanced within the compact Vivaldi antenna. To reduce return loss and further increase low-band gain, rectangular strips are embedded into curved slots. Additionally, the gain in the high-frequency band is improved by integrating a novel metasurface (MS) array, composed of cross elements of varying lengths arranged at different angles. This design ensures that the total gain of the antenna is evenly distributed over a wide frequency band, with a maximum gain approaching 13 dB. The practical experiments are carried out, and the results show agreement with simulated features.
