Abstract
In order to develop a new biomedical material (BM) for treating infections affecting natural barriers of the human body (skin and mucous membranes), this study investigated the effect of the encapsulation of the oligosaccharide cyclodextrin (CD) on the structure of a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel, as well as on the release kinetics and antibacterial activity of a drug molecule, namely fuchsin (FC). FTIR spectroscopy confirmed that CD is integrated into the PVA matrix and is firmly retained within it. The presence of CD increases the rate of FC release from the PVA matrix by a factor of four, making it possible to achieve 100% drug release within 24 h both in a model buffer system and in blood serum. The release of all the encapsulated FC molecules allows the material to achieve its full antibacterial potential, resulting in a four- to fivefold increase in antimicrobial activity against E. coli and B. subtilis strains. The encapsulation of CD in the polymer matrix can facilitate the development of new promising highly effective polymer materials for the treatment of infections arising from bacteria.
