Abstract

The effect of high-power ion beam (HPIB) of nanosecond duration on the corrosion of polycrystalline magnesium in physiological solution (0.9% NaCl) has been studied. Slowdown of corrosion rate for magnesium samples irradiated with a current density of 150 A/cm2 was found, which is probably related to doping of the surface layer with carbon. It was found that an increase in the number of irradiation pulses leads to an increase in corrosion resistance in physiological solution, which is apparently associated with the achievement of equality of the rates of formation and destruction of the Mg(OH)2 film in the corrosion process. The formation of needle-like structures on beam-irradiated surfaces during corrosion in NaCl solution is observed, which indicates the directional growth of corrosion products.
