Abstract
A novel metal wall-loaded comb-shaped wide beam array antenna is proposed to meet the application requirements of short-range automotive millimeter wave radar with wide field of view coverage. The antenna is composed of 8 elements with slots connected in series, and two identical metal walls are set on both sides of the elements. Through the implementation of tight coupling techniques between patch elements and the strategic integration of monopole-like metal walls, the antenna's impedance bandwidth and beamwidth have been significantly augmented. To elucidate the beam broadening mechanism, a comprehensive analysis of the proposed antenna has been conducted utilizing the equivalence principle. Simulation and measurement results demonstrate that the proposed antenna achieves a bandwidth exceeding 5 GHz, encompassing the 76 GHz–81 GHz automotive radar band. Meanwhile, the antenna radiates a distinctive saddle-shaped beam with a beamwidth surpassing 148° and a gain of 10 dBi. The wide beamwidth characteristic of this antenna not only fulfills the requirements for short-range radar applications but also exhibits substantial potential for extension into medium- and long-range detection radar applications.
