Abstract
The metal formed as a result of a single-stage aluminothermic process of getting iron-containing melts can be used in the foundry production (as a casting riser) and to obtain permanent joints (in seamless rail welding). Carbon materials guaranteeing the required refractoriness of casting molds used in processes of this kind are characterized by relatively high cost, which determines the necessity of searching their alternative. As a solution to this problem, we can propose the application of slags obtained as a result of aluminothermic processes. We present the results of experiments aimed at the determination of the effect of casting molds made of carbon and slag materials on numerous characteristics (chemical composition, microhardness, and structure) of the ingots of iron-containing alloys obtained as a result of aluminothermic remelting of thermite charges. The comparative analysis of the presented results enables us to assess the possibility of applying slags of aluminothermic process for getting iron-containing ingots.
