Abstract
Garnet-type lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (Li7La3Zr2O12, LLZO) combines competitive room-temperature Li-ion conductivity, thermal stability, and comparatively favorable compatibility with lithium metal, yet these bulk properties have not translated into reliable solid-state batteries. This review develops a process–state–field–failure–performance framework in which LLZO reliability is governed by connected grain boundaries, pores, cracks, surface films, and poorly contacted interfaces that localize ionic current, electronic leakage, and mechanical stress. Quantitative structure–transport relationships are evaluated by separating bulk, grain-boundary, and total conductivity and activation-energy contributions, showing why cubic-phase stabilization, increased dopant concentration, or densification alone cannot predict pellet-scale transport. Emphasis is placed on grain-boundary chemistry, local mechanical softening, pore connectivity, stripping-induced contact loss, stack-pressure windows, and lithium-assisted fracture as coupled determinants of filament penetration and short circuit. Interface treatments, polymer composites, porous scaffolds, and thin-sheet architectures are critically assessed according to their ability to homogenize current distribution, disrupt connected defects, and maintain electrode contact. In situ and operando techniques are examined for resolving the progression from void formation and current focusing to crack opening and lithium intrusion. Manufacturing and commercial readiness are evaluated using electrolyte thickness, area-specific resistance, areal capacity, operating pressure, cycle life, defect-screening capability, and production yield rather than conductivity alone. Data-driven approaches are considered supporting tools for uncertainty-aware materials selection, process control, and quality assurance. Overall, durable and scalable LLZO batteries require coordinated disruption of connected electro-chemo-mechanical failure pathways rather than marginal optimization of isolated material properties.
