Abstract
To overcome the trade-off between acid stability and permeability of acid-resistant nanofiltration membranes, this study developed a metal ion coordination encapsulation mediated sequential interfacial polymerization (MICE-SIP) strategy to fabricate polyamide-polyurea (PAPU) hybrid acid-resistant membranes. By leveraging the reversible Cu2+ coordination with polyethyleneimine and its acid-triggered in situ release, a hierarchical “loose PA layer & embedded PU layer” architecture was constructed. Within this structure, the intertwinement of PU and PA chains enable preferential H+ transport via PU hydrogen-bonding pathways in acidic media, shielding the amide bonds from direct attack and establishing a protective mechanism for the PA matrix. Cu2+ concentration modulation endows broad-spectrum tunability in membrane performance: permeability of 2–8 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1, MgSO4 rejection of 30%–95%, and acid resistance in 5–20 wt% H2SO4. At 0.1 wt% Cu2+, the PAPU membrane achieves excellent permselectivity (permeability: 2.41 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1; MgSO4 rejection: 95.64%), and no degradation after 31 days in 20 wt% H2SO4. In simulated etching foil wastewater, it delivers 96% Al3+ rejection and 94% acid permeation. Crucially, its processing flux was 3.8-fold higher than that of a commercial AMS membrane, corresponding to a proportional enhancement in acid recovery efficiency. This work provides a new paradigm for precise molecular engineering of acid-resistant nanofiltration membranes and demonstrates their promise for strong acid waste valorization.
