Abstract
In the Alacakaya region of Turkey, serpentine soils exhibit extensive surface coverage and contain high levels of Ni, Cr, and Co, and low levels of Sr. This study investigated the phytoremediation potential of Alyssum murale to mitigate Sr in serpentine soils. Alyssum murale plants were collected along with their soil, roots, and shoots, and Sr analysis was performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The mean Sr content was 10.5 mg/kg in soil, 45.1 mg/kg in roots, and 141 mg/kg in shoots. Mean enrichment coefficients of A. murale were 5.10 for roots and 16.4 for shoots, and the translocation factor was 3.18. Alyssum murale roots and shoots rapidly transferred Sr from the soil to its tissues. These results demonstrated that A. murale, due to its high Sr accumulation capacity, can be readily used in the remediation of Sr-contaminated soils.
