Abstract
Although there is strong support for the use of interventions based on applied behavior analysis (ABA) with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), there is also evidence of heterogeneity in response to intervention. Treatment intensity recommendations represent consequential clinical decisions that directly influence patient outcomes, resource allocation, and effectiveness of interventions. However, little is known about how behavior analysts develop the competencies required to determine treatment intensity in practice. We surveyed behavior analysts about their professional development experiences related to making these recommendations (N = 559). Results indicated that most respondents received training through in-field observation and shadowing provided by their employer. Implications for training and supervision to better prepare behavior analysts for this aspect of treatment planning are discussed.
期刊介绍:
Behavioral Interventions aims to report research and practice involving the utilization of behavioral techniques in the treatment, education, assessment and training of students, clients or patients, as well as training techniques used with staff. Behavioral Interventions publishes: (1) research articles, (2) brief reports (a short report of an innovative technique or intervention that may be less rigorous than a research report), (3) topical literature reviews and discussion articles, (4) book reviews.
