Abstract

The development of efficient and reusable visible-light-driven photocatalysts is essential for the sustainable removal of emerging pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater. In this study, a FeS2@polythiophene (FeS2@PTh) heterostructure has been synthesized using a simple in situ chemical oxidative polymerization method. The synthesized FeS2@PTh was used as a visible-responsive photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) from an aqueous medium. XPS analysis confirmed the existence of Fe2+, Fe3+, and S 2p species, with a significant interface between the FeS2 and PTh systems. FeS2@PTh exhibited higher degradation performance, removing 83% of TC (k = 1.422 × 10-2 min-1) and 85% of CIP (k = 1.687 × 10-2 min-1) under visible-light irradiation. Moreover, this study highlighted the excellent photostability and reproducibility of the photocatalysts, contributing to the development of sustainable photocatalytic materials for efficient water treatment.
